Senior Maine Trip: Experiential Learning at Academe of the Oaks

At Academe of the Oaks, learning does not stop when students leave the classroom. Our annual senior Maine trip gives Academe students the opportunity to take their academic studies into the field, combining science, environmental education, music, literature, and community experiences in one unforgettable journey.

For our seniors, the Maine trip is more than a class trip. It is an opportunity to explore a new environment, work alongside their classmates, apply what they have learned, and experience the kind of hands-on education that is central to the Academe of the Oaks experience.

Day One: Exploring the Intertidal Zone

Our Academe seniors began their first full day by getting up at dawn and hiking across the island to study the rocky coastline.

Working as field scientists, students inventoried the organisms living in the intertidal zone, observing the remarkable variety of life found where land and sea meet.

The experience brought biology and environmental science to life. Rather than simply studying coastal ecosystems in a classroom, students at Academe of the Oaks were able to observe organisms in their natural environment, make discoveries, and investigate the ecosystem firsthand.

After their morning fieldwork, students returned for Main Lesson and laboratory work, continuing to explore the scientific questions and observations that emerged during their time on the coast.

End of Day One: field research, hiking, Main Lesson, and laboratory work — a full day of learning through direct experience.

Day Two: Music, Arthropods, and Local Voices

The second evening of the Academe of the Oaks senior Maine trip brought students together around a group campfire with students from other schools.

Our students shared their arrangement of David Bowie’s “Space Oddity,” bringing music and creative expression into the Maine experience.

Today, students are turning their attention to arthropods, continuing their scientific investigations through hands-on learning.

Tonight, their education will expand beyond science as two local authors speak under the stars, giving students the opportunity to hear directly from writers connected to the region and its culture.

From coastal ecology to music, biology, and literature, the Maine trip gives Academe students opportunities to engage with the world around them from multiple academic and creative perspectives.

Why the Maine Trip Matters

The senior Maine trip represents an important part of the educational experience at Academe of the Oaks: giving students meaningful opportunities to apply what they learn.

During the trip, students aren’t simply visiting a new place. They are:

  • Conducting field observations in a coastal ecosystem
  • Studying organisms in their natural environment
  • Exploring intertidal ecology
  • Participating in laboratory work
  • Studying arthropods
  • Sharing music with a larger student community
  • Hearing from local authors
  • Working collaboratively with their classmates
  • Developing independence and responsibility
  • Connecting academic learning with firsthand experiences

These experiences help students understand that learning can happen anywhere — on a rocky coastline, around a campfire, in a laboratory, or beneath the stars.
