College Counseling

Academe of the Oaks is committed to guiding students to the colleges and universities that best match their talents, interests, and academic aspirations.

We aim to make the college application process as clear as possible, to give students (and their parents) the information that they need to evaluate post-secondary programs, to understand and make decisions regarding standardized testing, and to complete and submit applications for admission and financial aid.

The college counselor is available to answer questions regarding—

  • Registration for standardized testing, including SAT, ACT, and AP exams
  • College fairs
  • Scholarships and financial aid
  • College/campus visits
  • Visits to Academe from college and university representatives
  • College applications and essays

Preparation for interviews

Academe’s college counseling process begins in October of the junior year. The college counselor provides an overview of Academe’s college counseling services, a college handbook, information on the college search and selection process, and an introduction to tools available through Naviance (an online college search and application platform). Students are expected to take an active role in the college search and application process: to examine thoughtfully their hopes and plans for the future, to register for (and take) appropriate tests, to request and complete applications, and to plan and schedule college visits and interviews.

Students meet with the college counselor every two weeks during the first semester of their senior year for assistance with the college application process. The college counselor will provide information on merit-based and need-based tuition assistance, scholarships and financial aid, and FAFSA and the CSS Profile during a “Financial Aid Night” in September.

A word of thanks for all you did to facilitate Aly’s college search! Your guidance and advice were spot-on. Aly is going to a great school and because her search was targeted and thorough, I think there’s an excellent chance she’s going to the right college for her.

Academe is lucky to have you as a resource. Keeping a high school senior on course through the relentless sequence of deadlines is no small matter and we appreciate that and everything else you do. Parent, 2016
