Our juniors just completed their atomic chemistry block taught by Dr. Wyman. The historical development of atomic theory, from the Ancient Greeks to the Higgs boson, is explored allowing connections to be made between atomic theory and periodicity of the elements. Each student writes a “chapter” on the development of atomic theory. In class, they are given a scaffold on which to build their research, deciding for themselves how to order the material and on which topics to elaborate. In addition, each student researches an element and creates a tile representing that element. This year, each student has written a haiku for their chosen element. “They call me Potash…” At the end of the course, students are able to describe the nature of an atom, and matter, from their own perspective.
