Preparing for Beekeeping Season

At this time, the Academe beekeepers are busy preparing for the season. All the equipment needs to be inspected and cleaned and we will make sure to have all the pollinator plants ready for the bees. We are fortunate that we have the guidance of Master Beekeeper Keif Schleifer. It is of the utmost importance for Keif that our students learn beekeeping and that they take the lead on this ‘art’. Therefore it is not surprising that she made it possible in November for Isabella (junior) to attended a day-long, intensive Beekeeping course in Forest Park, GA hosted by the Tara Beekeepers Association. The course instructors were so impressed by her knowledge about honey bees and beekeeping. They could tell that she has a real passion for the craft and valuable experience. Her knowledge meant a lot to them because Isabella was the youngest participant in the course.  “Students like Isabella give us great hope for the future of beekeeping,” said P.N. Williams, Founder and past President of the Tara Beekeepers Association.

Isabella and her classmate, Yenatfanta, are in charge of the bees and they will work together under the guidance of Keif. The ideal beekeeper needs patience, observation skills, knowledge and an awe for the beauty of nature. Other students are welcome to become beekeepers as well.

The plan is to build a beekeeping house as soon as possible for the equipment and a learning station. The learning station will have microscopes and materials to learn about bees. We will apply for a grant for the learning station later in the spring.
